Next-gen Honda HR-V 2021

We reported earlier that Honda is readying 2 all-new SUVs based on the new-gen City platform. Adding to it, the next-gen Honda HR-V SUV is also under development. The next-gen HR-V will mark the debut of brand's new platform, which simply called the Honda Architecture.

For people not in the know, the current Honda HR-V is based on the Jazz's platform that also underpins the City sedan. The new model will grow in size, and will measure around 4.4 meters in length. The new reports claim that the upcoming HR-V will have a coupe-like styling. According to Japanese media, the new model will be unveiled in December 2020. The SUV will be launched in the Japanese market in 2021.

It is expected that the next-gen HR-V is not likely to be launched in India. Honda will have to make huge investment to locally develop this new platform in India. Instead, Honda could bring the other 2 SUVs in the market. The Japanese automaker is developing a sub-4 meter SUV and a mid-sized SUV, which are scheduled to be launched in 2021.

These 2 SUVs will be developed on the new-gen City platform, so localisation won't be a big issue for the Japanese brand. The mid-sized SUV will sit below the HR-V in the Honda's global line-up. This SUV will be developed for the developing nations where SUVs like Kia Seltos, Hyundai Creta and Nissan Kicks are hugely popular. The SUV could also arrive in our market; however, Honda is yet to make an official statement.

The sub-4 meter Honda SUV will be unveiled in 2021. It will directly rival the Toyota Raize and the Suzuki Jimny in the Japanese market. Going by the rising demand for the sub-4 meter, Honda could bring this SUV in our market. In India, it will challenge the likes of the Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon, Ford EcoSport, Mahindra XUV300 and the Maruti Vitara Brezza.

These two SUVs will be equipped with the new 1.5-litre 4-cylinder naturally-aspirated petrol engine with Honda's new two electric motor hybrid system. Adding to it, the SUVs will also receive the standard 1.5-litre i-VTEC petrol and the 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engines. While the former is good for 118bhp and 145Nm of torque, the 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine produces 120bhp and 200Nm of torque. The India-spec models could also receive the 1.5-litre i-DTEC diesel engine that produces 99bhp and 200Nm of torque.
